Digital or not Digital

Definition of Digital = Finite Number of possibilities

The Alphabet: is it Digital or not?

The alphabet is classified as a Digital concept because it consists of a finite set of discrete symbols. More specifically 26 letters in the english language. Since digital systems are defined by having a fixed number of possible values, the alphabet fits this definition.

While handwriting can introduce a form of noise the underlying concept of the alphabet remains digital. This is because each symbol is intended to be interpreted as one of the 26 letters. If the writing is neat and legible, this noise is minimized, making it easier to correctly identify each letter.

Analog TV: is it Digital or not?

An analog TV is classified as Not Digital because the signal it uses varies continuously rather than being restricted to a fixed set of discrete values. Under the definition of digital systems as having a finite number of possible states, analog television does not qualify, since its signal can take on any value within a continuous range.

Another important point is how noise affects the signal. In an analog TV, noise directly alters the signal in a continuous way, leading to visible disruptions such as static or fuzz. While digital systems are not completely  immune to noise, they can often correct or ignore small errors because the signal is interpreted as discrete values. This makes digital TVs appear more resistant to noise, whereas analog TVs degrade gradually as noise increases.

The Night Watch: is it Digital or not?

The Night Watch is classified as Not Digital because it does not rely on a finite set of values. Instead, it is analog, where things like color, light, and texture vary continuously across the painting. There is no fixed set of allowed shades or brushstroke patterns. The painting contains smooth transitions and subtle variations that cannot be a product of a limited number of possibilities.

Over time, the painting has also changed due to aging, such as yellowing of the varnish and sun damage. This can be seen a noise since they alter how the original image appears today.
